"What does it mean to have a "Sustainable wood species"?
Answer: Sustainable forestry is simply managing forests to meet the needs of today while leaving sufficient resources for future generations.
We take our responsibility to the environment very seriously; for this reason all timber used in the production of our flooring system comes from certified resources. Our hardwoods are all certified woods that are harvested under the most strict, surgery-like guidelines of independant forestry associations like the FSC or similar government forestry programs.
Government funded forestry programs ensure that the timber industry is regulated and not abused. These certifications are geared towards providing for wildlife protection and forest sustainability for the forest and the wildlife that lives in it.
With our Decking products, the entire manufacturing process is controlled by the corresponding Government's Sustainable Forestry Development Program. The timber used in the manufacturing of our products, is an important crop for the local economy and a valuable source of income for the local population who do not want to see this resource disappear. The Sustainable Forestry Development Programs are a collaborative effort to keep forestry practices in check. Bolivia has the largest amount of certified forestry land in South America as well as the highest amount of exported certified woods. Our Eco Decking tiles are manufactered through this program. This was created to guarantee future availability of desirable hardwoods. The program strictly regulates the amount of timber that is harvested in each area. Once an area has been selected for harvest or thinning, it is not touched again for a ten year period which allows for forest regrowth. This is the type of forestry we would like to see across the board with all hardwood products. Selected "mature replacement" trees are not touched which saves the forest canopy and promotes rapid re-growth.
Unlike conventional softwood decking our beautiful, densely grained, durable timber is treated naturally, without the use of harmful chemicals or impregnating agents. The tiles are treated with an oil finish that provides UV protection. This finish will fade by 20%-30% in the first few months of use. If you would like to keep the origional color of the tiles we recommend the use of our natural soy based oil sealer. This product can be used on any of our decking products.
We are proud of these approvals and believe that our products help promote the efficient use of hardwoods without damaging the forests of the world. In addition these programs create the highest quality hardwoods that are properly dried and regulated at the wood mills.
Ipe wood information
Ipe commonly referred to as ironwood because of the incredible density. It is harder and more durable than Teak and is one of the finest quality woods for decking applications. It has a distinct patina and fine olive brown grain.
TERMITE RESISTANCE - ( 15 years in ground without attack by termites ) Highest Rating. FIRE RESISTANCE - ASTM-E84 tested to National Fire Protection Code, Class A, Uniform Building Code, Class 1; Highest Rating. HARDNESS - ASTM-D143 tested; Approximately seven times harder than Cedar, our Ipe decking stands up to the harshest conditions imaginable. SLIP RESISTANCE - ASTM-C1028-89 tested; Our Ipe Decking exceeds the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements for Static Coefficient of friction in a wet environment STRENGTH - ASTM-D143 tested; Three times stronger than Cedar, our Ipe Decking exceeds all existing code requirements for exterior constructions.
